It was the first album to feature vocalist Freddie Mercury, who had been with the band for a year, and was also the last Queen album to be recorded at Shepperton Studios in London. With its more lush production and heavier use of flamenco guitar, it is very different from the band's previous two albums. The album reached number one in the UK, the US and Australia, and number two in Canada. Production Recording The album was recorded at Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles with producer Roy Thomas Baker. It was the first Queen album that was not mixed in London, and the last Queen album until The Game in 1979 to be recorded there. Mercury felt his voice had matured, and by 1977 he was much more confident in expressing himself vocally. Previously, Mercury had been hesitant to sing, but by the time of this album, he felt more comfortable using his voice in this way. The Spanish influence on the record is partly inspired by Mercury's interest in culture from the country, where he often travelled. The songs "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Lily of the Valley" were inspired by the fashion and films of Spain. "Lily of the Valley" was a new song that was not included on the earlier studio albums. Another song inspired by Spain, "Love Me Like a Star", would later be released as a single in 1986 and become a hit for American singer Jessica Walter. Songs The final track, "I'm in Love with My Car", was recorded live in an open air sound-check in London. It was originally included on the 1970 debut album, and was also recorded during the live material from their 1975 Live Killers album, though the album version runs about four minutes longer than the version on Live Killers. "Love Me Like a Star" was intended for inclusion on the 1977 Greatest Hits album, but was left off at the last minute in favour of "Tie Your Mother Down". The album's only ballad is "Love of My Life", which was composed by Mercury with lyricist Tim Rice. Packaging The sleeve is a psychedelic-style poster produced by Bernie Fiedler. It features a prominent photograph of the band by Anton Corbijn. It was originally included in a limited edition of 40,000 albums in the US and 600,000 in the UK. The original UK poster had a different picture of Mercury on it, and another (without Mercury) was used in
